Greek MP Maria Karagiorgi (1918 – 2001) after her release from exile during the civil war in Greece, 1951. Maria Karagiorgi joined the communist movement from the interwar period, and was an active participant in the resistance movement during the German occupation. Because of her convictions she was imprisoned and exiled for many years. After the war she was elected as a left-wing member of parliament.
