During the Greek Civil War (1946-1949), many women participated in the armed movement, joining the Democratic Army of Greece (DSE). The resistance fighter and artist Maria Ferla-Beikou (1925-2011) was a ranking officer of the guerrilla army. She also participated in the women’s organization of the Communist Party, the Panhellenic Democratic Organization of Women (PDEG).
