During the Greek Civil War (1946-1949), many women participated in the armed movement, joining the Democratic Army of Greece (DSE). The resistance fighter and artist Maria Ferla-Beikou (1925-2011) was a ranking officer of the guerrilla army. Women also had their own newspapers.
